session style guide

I'm looking forward to our session together! The number one question I get from those who have booked me is ‘What should I wear?’

Although there’s no right or wrong answer for that, below are a few things to keep in mind when planning your Family’s look. believe it or not, i am sure you have plenty of amazing choices already in your closet so be sure to pull out your favorite pieces that you feel confident in and go from there.

don’t be afraid of color

jewel colors look great on camera! rust, mahogany, dark greens...

also midi or long bohemian dresses with lots of movement or interesting sleeves will add a romantic feel to your images.

if your session is later in the year then bring along a cozy cardigan or sweater. or pair a layered look with jeans. leggings paired with soft and delicate fabrics for little girls will look especially dreamy but keep them warm.

also Accessorize! headbands, baby turbans and hats are all wonderful ways to round out your photographs.

make sure you fell comfortable sitting, lifting, and dancing around in your clothing so we can have fun at your session and those relaxed happy vibes will show in your photos.

Coordinate and complement

Think about coordinating rather than everyone completely matching.

For example have mom and baby wear dresses in different shades of a color. or pick 3-4 colors and stick with those throughout everyone’s outfits.

for women, choose flattering silhouettes (flowy!) and colors that complement your natural features. you want to be able to move freely and without inhibitions during your session. think about when you pick up and hold you baby or child , or even swing them around, you don’t want to be fidgeting and adjusting straps or waistlines.

Hair and makeup

For those who will be wearing makeup: put on extra - more than you would normally. If you look in the mirror and think you’ve put on a bit too much, it’s probably just about perfect for pictures! I also suggest wearing your hair fully, or at least partially down. It adds movement and a natural element to the photos, creating a warm, relaxed look. even if it’s a bit windy!

For the gents

Long, fitted pants and close toed shoes are the most sophisticated and masculine looks for men. They draw the attention away from his legs and feet and place it where you want it: on his handsome face.

So for your session, it’s best to leave the jean shorts and sandals at home, as well as any pants that are baggy. a Fitted dress pant, colored pants, or chinos look best. Solid shades of grey, brown, or navy are a strong complement to most women’s outfits.

-

don’t forget…

If your location is in your own home, no shoes or socks for anyone (I don’t want to see you in your running shoes on your own bed).

a neutral solid blanket or sheet you can throw on the ground to sit on is a good thing to have on hand if you have babes who are crawling or just sitting up.

the most important thing you can wear during your session is a genuine smile. play with your kids and your partner as you would on any other day! the same way you get them to giggle and love on you at home is what you want to do during your session.
